Would voluntary VAT registration pay off?
A simple estimate based on GOV.UK guidance on voluntary registration.
Who can register voluntarily
- Businesses with VAT taxable turnover below £90,000 that make, or intend to make, taxable supplies.
- Not businesses that only make exempt or out of scope supplies.
- Once registered, you must charge VAT, keep digital records and file VAT returns through Making Tax Digital software, the same as any registered business.
When it usually pays off
- Your customers are VAT-registered businesses. They reclaim the VAT you charge, so your prices do not effectively rise for them.
- You have significant costs with VAT, such as equipment, stock or professional fees, which you can reclaim.
- You sell zero-rated goods. You charge 0% but reclaim VAT on your costs, so you may get regular repayments.
- You are close to £90,000 and want to set up VAT before you have to.
When it usually costs you
- You sell to consumers, who cannot reclaim VAT. You either raise prices by 20% or absorb the VAT and earn less.
- Your costs carry little VAT, so there is little to reclaim.
- You want to avoid the admin of VAT returns and invoices.
Reclaiming costs from before you register
- You can ask for voluntary registration to be backdated by up to 4 years.
- You can usually reclaim VAT on goods bought up to 4 years before registration that you still hold, and on services bought up to 6 months before.
- If you backdate, you also owe VAT on your sales from that date, so do the sums first.
See reclaiming VAT on pre-registration expenses.
The Flat Rate Scheme
Small businesses can use the Flat Rate Scheme, paying a fixed percentage of turnover instead of working out VAT on every sale and purchase. It can suit some service businesses, but limited cost traders pay a higher rate. See flat rate vs standard VAT.

Final thoughts
Voluntary registration is a pricing decision as much as a tax one. If your customers are VAT registered or your costs carry a lot of VAT, it usually pays. If you sell to consumers, work out what 20% does to your prices before you register.
